St Michael the Archangel

St Michael the Archangel is at the heart of the vibrant community of Chagford, Devon. It has been a sacred place long before the present, rather beautiful church was rebuilt and rededicated in 1261; the first Celtic Christians were here some 1,500 years ago. We are part of a growing family of churches called the North Dartmoor Parishes which seek to show God's love in this beautiful part of the country and celebrate what the Holy Spirit is doing here. Everyone of whatever tradition, and none, will find a warm welcome here.

There is a range of different types of worship, groups and activities at St Michael's, including a talented church choir, small groups for discussion and Bible study and The Well, a time of contemplative quiet (weekly, except 1st Sundays, 6pm winter/7pm summer). Please see our website for more details. Like our sister churches, St Michael's is a FairTrade church and we enjoy hosting a wide range of community events - from concerts to political debates to Shakespearean productions to welcoming visiting Tibetan monks! If you're interested in getting married here, please contact [email protected]

We are passionate about promoting bio-diversity and a team of friends from across the community are working to build on the success of recent years in our churchyard. Our most recent Bio Blitz - a survey by locals, schoolchildren and visiting Phds from UCL - took place in May 2019. In 2016 our Swifts project meant that in 2017 these beautiful (and endangered) birds returned to nest in our tower after many years absence. Last year we were delighted to show visitors, schoolchildren and the RSPB facebook hub live-stream coverage during the breeding season and will be doing so again this year

St Michael's is open every day of the week and we look forward to welcoming you.
